Tolerance

* * Warning: Serious post ahead! * *

You all know how much I love to read and watch the news. I find a morbid fascination with the facts presented through this medium.

But recently I can't stop thinking about what is on the news and how often I find myself thinking of the word tolerance. Tolerance has come to mean acceptance, not just respect and kindness.

I enjoy this quote which reflects my feelings:

Tolerance obviously requires a non-contentious manner of relating toward one another’s differences. But tolerance does not require abandoning one’s standards or one’s opinions on political or public policy choices. Tolerance is a way of reacting to diversity, not a command to insulate it from examination. (Dallin H. Oaks)

Tolerance seems to be a one-way street -- everyone wants to receive it, not give it.

I'm frustrated by the twisting of the meaning of the word tolerance.

I need to put myself in 'Time Out' away from the media for awhile.

That's why I can't watch the news. I'm tired of people trying to make me feel like a "bigot" for having a dissenting opinion. Thanks for that great quote! It's perfect!

Thanks for your serious blog! I was just discussing a similar topic with a friend today. Isn't there a scripture about what the world calls white is really black and what the world calls good is bad?? Interesting...

Thanks, Wendy, for the quote and the reminder. I, too, get so frustrated when the very vocal and demanding minority wants all the accommodations and tolerance without reciprocating the same.

I had a rather heated & animated discussion at our lunch out at The Barn this week and was almost afraid that I might be "escorted" out by the customers at another table because I was verbalizing my frustrations.

Thanks for the reminder and the suggestion for a personal TIME-OUT. I could use one.

Great post to read these days. We are in dire need of a lesson on tolerance in California right now. Prop 8 has created so much conflict and hostility in our neck of the woods. I've turned off the TV, too.

Okay, no doubt! I am sick of the church always being on the chopping block that we are not tolerant enough to other people. Those same groups sure are tolerant of us! Putting suspicious white powder in our temples sure is showing tolerance towards us. I think I need to stop watching the news as well. It just makes me made. The first 3 stories are usually people attacking the church in some way, reminding us to be tolerant. I love the quote you posted. I think I am going to swipe your post and add it to my blog if you you don't care.

Wendy, I totally agree. Yes, we as a society, used to be cruel to certain groups. So now the pendulum has swung way too far in the other direction.

Example, I used to work in the psych ward at a hospital. Because people used to be treated so badly in these places, now the patients can do anything without repercussions. When I was pregnant I had to leave that job because there was nothing to protect my safety and if I was assaulted, oh well. There was no way to prosecute in that situation.

We see this throughout our society now. We are supposed to accept any lifestyle choice as okay. It's out of control.
